new here. read forum guidelines. was hoping to find a thread for newcomers like me so i wouldn't have to start a new topic. but need to be on this forum because i feel very alone and scared.

about me: i am a physical therapist assistant and work in an the outpatient rehab department at my local hospital. the building i work in is outside the main hospital. i just turned 46. i am healthy except have genital herpes for the past 18 years that is very well controlled with preventative acyclovir.

current situation: was in key largo. laying on hammock with my boyfriend. i felt like what was a mosquito bite on my right buttock. said, "i got bit, we better go inside." the next day we both got tattoos. that night the "bite" turned into a flaming, red, swollen, painful mess that was about the size of my whole hand.

i went to the hospital that i work at but not the ER. i first went to occupational health because i am an employee there. the PA looked at my buttock and s... read more

MRSA without blood culture?

I had lap band surgery almost 2 months ago. I continue to have infection at my incision site, despite having used zithromax & clindomycin, as well as granulation tissue coming through the incision.

My surgeon just told me at the last visit that he believes I have MRSA & have most likely have had it the whole time. I asked if he would be doing blood work to confirm it. He said that it was not necessary since he was treating it as MRSA anyway with the clindomycin. The Dr. didn't even give me any information about MRSA, much less explain how I should handle it. I have small children at home & am very concerned with their safety.

My question is...Is it actually necessary to have blood work done when MRSA is suspected? I'm just wondering if this Dr. is worried about hurting his practice's reputation as well as the hospital where he performed the surgery.

Hi I stumbled on this forum yesterday and today was admitted for cellulitis two
days after having a boil lanced. The ID will be in tomorrow so I hope at least
have the results from the boil but may not yet have blood results. Everyone is of
course assuming mrsa and they have me on vancomycin. So my question is
this - am I likely to need long term antibiotic infusions or is it two courses of
Vcin and home with a couple prescriptions? I realize nobody has a crystal ball
but has anyone here dealt with that? I'm a 39 year old healthy weekend warrior
type with two boys. Sorry if typos or bad grammar, it's 3:30 am and I'm typing
on my phone from the hospital room.

timing of hardware removal

approx. two weeks after having a plate and pins placed for a fracture to my fifth metatarsal (mid-shaft) I developed cellulitis and hospitalized for three days after the culture came back positive for MRSA. Currently at home with IV Cubicin. The orthopedist has told me the hardware must be removed but can't tell me when. The IDD gives me the impression it should be done ASAP and I would prefer to get it over with instead of waiting until I'm "healed up" and then going through another surgery. Have not been able to find a standard protocol for correct timing and hope someone has some answers? Additionally I had 6 dental implants placed 6 months ago-is this another potential problem? I would appreciate any help or advice from someone who has been through this.

I have a 2 and a half year old daughter and she has been battling staph infection for over a year. The first incident was when I was changing her diaper and saw a red bump...looked almost like a pimple. A few days later it was inflammed and came to a head. The size of the knot underneath the skin was a little bigger than a quarter. This bump was located on her private area. I took her to the doctor, they informed me that it was staph (a form a MRSA) He told me there are many different types of MRSA.THey put her on cream as well as bactrim. Well she has had it 7 times since then.(In a about a year span) It went from her private..to her butt..to the outside of her leg(3 bumps that time) back to her private area now she has 2 on her legs again and 1 more in coming back on her butt. They are like boils. They inflamm, get a head, and rupture. It is very painful for her. Just as painful for me I think being a mother and watching my daughter go through this at such a young age. I took her... read more

Roommate disclosure

My roommate of a few months disclosed to me upon moving in that she was bi-polar and on medication. I said that was fine as long as she stayed on her meds or had a note from her doc saying she didn't need them. Things have been fine until she started developing severe acne and announced she was discontinuing her meds as they were the cause. I reminded her of our agreement and she told me that she had MRSA so she needed to take care of her skin. Now that I have been researching this disease I am so mad! She moved into my home with this communicable disease without telling us, and I have a fifteen year old and a pregnant nineteen year old!!!! She paid rent for this month and I have already given that to the landlord but my instinct is to pay her back anyway and ask her to leave immediately. We dont have a formal rent agreement, but I doubt seriously a judge would expect me to let her stay, especially in light of the fact that at the moment she has open sores which she can't kee... read more

anyone suspect a link?

All the overwhelming effects I've read, and having experienced them myself since contracting a fatal MRSA infection--internally--in my head--no visible sore, but a severely swollen face-unknown sorce--not hospital (I was a healthy, fun loving 28 yr old 3rd Grade teacher, for crying out loud!) 2 summers ago, I have never been the same.

Was on potent, agressive treatment of antibiotics--via IV/picc line, 4 hrs. a day for almost 2 months; still had picc line when I started school--could now drive myself over an hr to my disease/infectious specialist who literally saved my life---after initial trip to ER via my Dad, then diagnosis- and watching the look of horror and defeat on the faces of numerous docs/specialists/surgeons-even the staff--rushing me off to others who were also clueless as what to do w/me.

Finally had to go on long term disability back in Dec. b/c I couldn't get rid of yet another severe case of Strep Throat--4 rounds of antibiotics &... read more

MRSA and the hospital

Hello everyone, I wanted to get some advice. About a month ago I
went in and had surgery to drain a boil. I was given painkillers and
Cephalexin or something like that. It was done and going just fine.
The surgeon said the culture came back with nothing, that the boil was
just blood. About two weeks later I got what looked like a bug bite.
Within a few days it was large and I went to a medical center. They
said it was probably MRSA and they didn't even check anymore as it was
so common. He gave me a prescription to Sulfamethoxazole. A day
later I went to my surgeon again. He immediately said stop taking
those antibiotics. Looks like MRSA, lets operate today. Now, two
weeks later after confirming the second operation was MRSA and using
Hibiclens like I was told, I am getting the same boils again. Is it
safe to say this came from the hospital? Any tips on cleaning to help
get rid of this stuff?

I've been battling mrsa off and on for about 15 yrs now. Some were bad some were ok, and some didnt really get anywhere at all. I posted here about 9 or 10 months ago because I had a mrsa infection on my left outter thigh that would not stop draining and would not heal. Well it finally did, but left a tiny hole. I have since had 6 more and am on the 7th, which I want to write about now. It started showing last Monday with the pain and the heat, but not size. By Tuesday morning I noticed it was the size of a golf ball and very painful, red, swollen, and I couldnt sit as it is located on my inner left thigh rather high up. By Wedneday night I couldnt take the pain anymore and asked my husband to take me to the hospital. The only thing they did was localize it, make a very small incision and drain about 1/4 of it. They took a culture, gave me painkillers, doxycycline, bactrim, packed it and sent me home. I saw my doctor yesturday(Friday) and he took a look at it and the first words out... read more

what if CA-MRSA is never treated?

I have asked about this about 6 months ago. I believe my 89-year-old father may have MRSA and his doctor will not test him nor refer him to a specialist.

His symptoms are mostly an extremely itchy rash and an ocassional "bug-bite" or "pimple" type of manisfestation.

I would never have guessed MRSA myself except that I myself have had it, and after my initial diagnosis the man for whom I was a caregiver (who happened to be my dad's age) broke out in a similar painful, ultra-itchy rash like my father's present situation. With my employer, I suspected MRSA almost right away (because of my recent infection) but none of the several doctors I took him to would even consider it. I started out with his primary and from there we went to a dermatologist, an infectious disease specialist, his VA doctor and NOT ONE would seriously consider that his itchy rash (which would pop up here and then there and looked more like cellulitis to me) could be MRSA.

After about 5 months his orig... read more

About the Clindamycin D-test

I am a microbiology student. I hope there are some microbiologist here who can answer my questions. Its about the D-test.
We know that D-test is looking at the inducible clindamycin-resistance under the effect of erythromycin. But I encountered different patterns in the disc diffusion test.

1) The presence of D-zone with reduced MRSA growth.

2) A double-ring: normal growth -> reduced growth -> normal growth -> reduced growth towards the Clindamycin disc.

3) A clear circular zone within a D-zone.

4) Growth of MRSA around the CC disc within the outer clear zone.

Thanks!

My 29 month old daughter has MRSA and now has had it for going on 6 months. Every time i take her to the doctor they give me the same meds and it goes away for maybe a day but only after two weeks of using meds. Then she gets it again, right now she has 3 of them and its to the point she isn't eating well, having trouble sleeping because they are all on her thighs and bottom. She tells me it hurts all the time and i want to relieve her of the pain, but no doc seems to know exactly what to do. She's so tiny and doesn't understand why i can't get rid of it. If anyone has tips or a good source who can tell me what to do please let me know. I'm tired of her hurting. And i just had a newborn a month ago and im sooo scared she's gonna get it to. Please Help.
Thank You

Zyvox / Bactroban???

I am now under the care of an ID doctor; the last culture I received came back inconclusive largely due to the exuberant amount of antibiotics I had been taking including the IV treatment in the hospital of Vancomycin. I have now started the next phase of treatments including the antibacterial wash recommended by Ladyk, probiotics in addition the ID doc prescribed Bactroban and Zyvox. I have read up on these two antibiotics, though would like anyone’s opinion who may have used these treatments and what the outcome was. Has anyone encountered any adverse effects while utilizing these treatments either during the course of administration or after effects once completing the cycle? The Zyvox is to be administered twice daily 600mg for two weeks at which time a meet with the ID doc again, the Bactroban is to be used twice daily in nose and on current and forming lesions. Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

It has been a year since MRSA came into our family. First our teenager, then me, then Hubby. We have learned a ton from this site!

We adults have regained our health without antibiotics, using the suggestions here. We now maintain with occasional topical treatments and extra supplements if needed.

Our son is back on antibiotics for the first time since last fall, after a relapse following dental surgery. Because of the time he had to rebuild his immune system during nine months without antibiotics, he is having no issues with the Bactrim, and it appears to be working.

The PA gave us a key piece of advice which I think is worth sharing here. She told our son that hot compresses and baths are the most important thing, 'more important than medication', because the bloodstream, carrying medication [or whatever you take internally] must reach the infection site in order to work.

The temptation is to quit with the compresses and baths when the initial wound or infection se... read more

Have not been hospitalized since March. Diabetic since 1999. On injected insulin since April.

On 9/28/06, had a bout of gout in conjunction with high fever and chills. Right foot sensitive to touch, so kept it elevated and without covering. Next day noticed what appeared to be a spider bite about 5 inches above my ankle. Remember killing a spider while in bed with gout.

On 9/30/06, noticed red inflamed area greatly expanded from ankle to near knee. Area puffy, perhaps 1-1/2 times larger, with special tenderness/pain at spider bite location. Painful to walk. Saw MD on 10/2, initial diagnosis of either Staphyloccocus or Streptococcus infection, culture taken, was given Keflaxin and Bacitrin prescription. Had it filled same day and started immediately on 3 Keflaxin and 2 Bacitrin daily. Told to come back 10/4 for follow-up.

Received diagnosis 10/4 of MRSA. Wound had formed crater by then about 4 cm across, and had started weaping. Assumed pus was not good for area, and with do... read more

I had 2 mrsa boils, one healed quickly and the other took 30+ days. But I am Diabetic II, and the 1st symptoms I had were flu type with trouble walking with hips, 6 days of flu then vomiting which I never do, so I went to doc and he prescribed SMT? antibiotics for the 2 boils. Now my sores healed but I feel so bad and hurt. My hips and legs in constant pain, I get pressure in them like my blood vessels want to explode, then stabbing sharp pain above ankle. I have very weak immune system and I need help. Money is a problem so I cannot consult my doc without it. He does nothing over phone. Please email me at gingerballew@hotmail.com if you know a solution for me. Thx.
