My brother in law was in a car accident on August 30th. He had to have surgery for a shattered right ankle and he had deep lacerations on his right hand and left shin which required sutures. Two weeks after being released from the hospital we took him to the ER with a slightly elevated temperature and pain in his right ankle. When his cast was removed his ankle was very swollen and infected. They did a procedure to irrigate the wound and remove dead tissue. All other sutures where checked and his left leg also had started to get infected. When the culture results came back he was told that he has HA MRSA in both wound sites. He stayed in the hospital with repeated procedures to irrigate until there were no visible signs of infection. He was sent home last Tuesday with a PICC line for twice daily 1500 mg vancomycin. He is also going to physical therapy 5 days a week for whirlpool therapy on his right ankle. Every time he goes the check for signs of infection. Today the wound had puss... read more

My 13 year old daughter had MRSA osteomyelitis in right femur last Sept.--seven surgeries, clinical failure on vancomycin. After dapto + doxycyclin she had been MRSA-free (supposedly) until August of this year. She wound up with a MRSA skin infection on same knee--was treated with Bactrim and decolonized with hibiclens. She had concurrent knee pain after starting xc running in August. Though x-rays have shown continual improvement her 1st MRI in one year showed edema in marrow. Doc wants to repeat in one month and consider surgery. Would like to get a second ortho opinion. They are also considering an immunologist. Any suggestions in Twin Cities or Mayo (MN)? Thank you.

My 3 year old has MRSA

We've been dealing with this for a year and a half now. Her first boil was 3-17-09 (age 2) in her diaper area. It had a head on it and when it burst she had streaks/tenticles running through it. I assume that means it was now in her blood. It evidently started with some eczema on her behind, she itched the dry skin with her dirty fingernails and boil #1 appeared. We took her in right away, they tested it and it came back positive - sensitive to Bactrim.

It was nearly impossible to get the Bactrim liquid in her, it tastes HORRIBLE and nothing masks it. We ended up using cake icing until she was old enough to swallow 1/2 a pill - and thank heavens for that!

Anyway, she'd get these boils every couple of months but the break outs became less and less frequent. When they'd come, we'd get more Bactrim and start the hibiclen washes and nasal ointment. They also kept getting smaller and smaller until one day it'd been 6 months w/o a boil. We thought we were done but she g... read more

I am on my third round of MRSA. Actually, only the 2nd round was confirmed through a culture. In Sept 08 I had an "ingrown hair" in my armpit that was treated with antibiotics. In Sept 09 was the confirmed MRSA in same armpit, drained and treated with antibiotics. Now, in Sept 10, I have a lesion on my butt. The nurse practitioner said it was too firm to lance and did not culture. Prescribed Bactrim for 10 days and Muciprin for 5 days. The Muciprin is now over and I have four days left of antibiotics. The lesion is getting smaller, less painful, and only loses about 3 droplets a day for two days now. This morning, I blacked out in the shower and had chills for about an hour afterwards, no temperature. Got into the doctor's office and saw a different practitioner (actual doctor this time). She noted that I had somewhat low blood pressure (110/70) and a 99 temp. She said I "must have caught one of the many viruses going around, and did I need a dr's note for work?". I aske... read more

Subject: Allibiotic CF used as immune support - stabilized allicin in supplement - as it applies to age specific use in children.

Caution for the sake of one’s health and well being is always important to me. Therefore, when considering using Allibiotic CF for children suffering MRSA infections, I could find no age appropriate guidelines in which to advise inquiring parents… so I contacted manufacturer NOW.

Response from NOW Science & Nutrition Group:

[“We do not have an age specific dosing as a couple variables come into play. While children who can swallow the capsule under 75lb might use 1/2 the labeled dose or 1 capsule per day, for some the full 2 caps per day may be desired and is generally safe.

Side effects to watch for can be gastric upset in kids.

Thank you for your inquiry,
NOW Science & Nutrition Group”]

Hope this helps.

Best wishes,

Today was the big day!- IV catheter was removed. Last week the hardware was finally removed from my foot, sterilized and on the way to the jeweler to be made into a bracelet to remind me how lucky I was to get through this and after 5 surgeries, medications and other expenses, it will be the only jewelry I ever own worth over 50,000.00!When I reviewed the IDD's hospital summary, it stated that cultures showed MRSA and carinii bacterium. I was aware of the MRSA but not the other and will of course ask the IDD about that when I see her next week but as usual I am impatient and wanted to see if anyone can shed some light on that in the interim. I know I have to stay "watchful" but can finally see some light at the end of the tunnel. I remain optimistic that the light isn't a train! Thanks for any answers on the carinii and hope everyone is having a good day.Namaste and be well...Terri

I have been without a Mrsa flare up now for over a year. I always got infections on skin.I had over 2 years of antibiotic treatment with the last being Cubicin and zyvox, which was the only thing left that worked.Since then I have had reacurring yeast infections that seem to keep coming back, yes I take allicin, and a whole bunch of other things probiotics, oregano oil,to many to mention.I also was diagnosed with IBS they said was most likely caused by antibiotic use. I have been treated with Fluconazole for the yeast and within a few weeks it came back,so now I started Caprylic acid a natural remedy and now I have been getting cramps in stomach and beginning to wonder if infection is throughout intestines and or could I have mrsa inside me? I don't think I can deal with anything more and I was ordered 3 weeks ago to get ultrasound of pelvic and stomach and just put it off due to the mounting Dr Bills and loss of job.I had a colonoscopy that showed nothing last year hense the IBS diagno... read more

Started by Arrow Posted: November 18, 2007 at 21:30 A while back I posted a testimonial about a woman who cured her MRSA eating 3 to 4 cloves of garlic every 3 to 4 hours day and night, for one month. well, almost cured. Like 80 percent gone or something like that at the writing. She did not use antibiotics.

I am no garlic expert but this sounded wonderful to me. Aside from social implications I thought it might be a viable idea.

Have you ever seen the garlic stuffed olives in the supermarket? We eat them all the time.

A couple of months ago when all the olives were gone I peeled several garlic bulbs worth of cloves and refilled the jar and stuck them in the back of the fridge and as usual, forgot about them.

My husband found them yesterday and put some on our dinner plate. They were great, and the garlic odor not extreme and they were quite palatable.

So I am trying to compare garlic cloves to the {edited out} other garlic capsule products. Would soaking them in a... read more

I have not posted in awhile, been pretty good, just fatigued. I have had no MRSA outbreaks in 14 months now.I have had reacurring Yeast infections and have used garlic/allicin.I am really tired of being tired and getting yeast infections.I get better then get slacked about taking what I need and eating yeast free and boom its back again.I went to a natural DR and they told me about Caprylic acid and so again I am trying something new.Has anyone tried this remedy before? I am getting to the point where feeling good and then bad again is taking its toll on me and I just don't have the fight in me anymore.MRSA has destroyed my health, mind, body and is working on my very soul.True, I have had no outbreaks for awhile, but all the other things it has brought upon me is to much to deal with.

Hello I am 32 years old, and always had considered myself a healthy and clean person. A couple of years ago I notice I had a small bump on my thigh, and it would periodically get "bigger" then get "smaller". It never got inflamed, itchy, nor painful. I wouldn't have even called it a boil at the time. But over time it seemed to get progressively larger, but I never worried since it never looked like an infection. I was working out in the local gym at the time.

Then about a year ago I took a new job at a jail facility. I work in the same complex as the jail, and occasionally I have to service computers in the actual jail facility as well. I work in a small office with three corner desks, and my desk becomes a temporary place for someone to sit while I am not in the office. The area I'm in still "smells" like a jail, and offenders who don't voluntarily turn themselves in are brought through the halls.

Since I began working there the spot on my leg became itchy, red, later... read more

I had ca/mrsa about 3-4 weeks ago. I was unaware at the time what I had . I stayed at a condominium with my elder parents for 2-3 days at the time I had an active outbreak. After I found out I may have mrsa,2-4 days later, I alerted my parents after reading all these informative websites. Both my parents have contracted a bad cold and under doctors orders are on a z/pac(azithromycin) since 09/13. I am worried they could have mrsa. Can they have mrsa without the outward physical signs(sore, bite, boil etc)?. What should I look for with them? what symptoms? my mom is diabetes type2 also. I would like them to get some sort of test from doctor. Is my mrsa, whick has subsided possibly related to their colds. My sister and her son were also there with me 4weeks ago and had colds from allergies. Just because I had/have mrsa ,confirmed thru culture of sore, how do I make sure they are not infected

I think this may affect more than just me.
As your symptoms from MRSA seem to get
worse, when do you go to the ER?

I'm losing the battle. Having visited the ER 12/
08, without sputum or other tests and being a
smoker, I was diagnosed & treated for "
bacterial brochitis". Three batteries of
antibiotics later, my diabetic self had reduced
symptoms, but didn't feel cured. Same thing
happened at the same ER in 2004. In March/
April 2009, having the same symptoms and
sick as a dog as my family doctor had died and
I was going to medicare, I made an
appontment with my old PCP & was treated by
this pulmonary specialist for the same (2
batteries of Spectracef). By May 2009 I was
able to get into a "medicare" doctor that
treated me with 2 batteries of Doxycyline and
also changed a bunch/added a bunch of meds
based on bloodwork & diabetes tests. One
med he put me on was 2000mg of Metformin
that almost killed me.
While I can agree my diabetes reading... read more

[“Why do so many people carry staph germs? Because the human body is the staph bacterium's natural habitat, says Gordon Dickinson, MD, chief of infectious diseases at the University of Miami and the Miami VA Medical Center.”]

"We are the ecology," Dickinson tells WebMD. "Humans are the ecological niche for Staphylococcus aureus. MRSA is just a variant."

MRSA in Florida

Hello all. I contracted MRSA, most likely in 2003, when I was admitted to a hospital for a week with an unrelated intestinal infection. Of course I had no idea I had acquired a nice little "present" from the hospital until nine months later when I was bitten by a spider. The wound became abcessed and severely imflamed. So I went to the hospital, had it lanced and drained, and I was told to come back in two days if it wasn't better. Well two days later it was much worse and I came back to the ER to find out the abcess contained MRSA. I was sent to an Infectious Disease Specialist, who had a pic-line I.V. installed into my arm that goes to the heart. For five weeks I received daily intravenous Vancomyacin treatments at this doctor's clinic. The wound healed fine, and two weeks after my I.V. was removed I had a full blood panel done and was declared MRSA free. Things were fine for six months until I developed a nasty sinus infection that wouldn't respond to conventional anti-biotics. ... read more

My dad has chronic leg wounds. The current one he's had for 3+ years. I think the Dr.'s are clueless, as he has been on oral, IV, and silver patches, as well as pressure pumps, he has had vein surgery, . . .I swear no one knows how to fix this and I'm tired of seeing him get sicker with all this medicine. PLEASE if anyone has been through this or ANYONE who can help us!!!! You will be in my graces!!!

My niece had a lump removed back in nov 2009. A few days later the
site had drainage and was swollen - her doctor told her she was ok and
was normal- put on antaboitic. Then jan or feb she started with sever
pain in her hands and joints...swelling she would go to doctor or er
and they would give her pain meds but then in my opinion just thought
it was in her head and she just wanted drugs. She has been to several
different specialist and blood work taken and they can not figure what
if anything is wrong with her. She is being passed around from dr.
specialist to dr. The latest dr told her her thyroid quit working.
She is on meds for this for 2 months. Then the other day her face
swelled up her hands are so swollen she can not hold a pencil and
sometimes can not drive. She went to er with swollen face 3 times the
size and a sore on face. and they sent her home on yet another
antobotic and pain meds. Then two days later she went to the er

Had a blister and got CA-MRSA on my finger. How common is this MRSA thing? Sounds like it is spreading like wild fire. I am ashamed to tell anyone. The one friend I did tell is afraid to come near me. I feel like I have leprosy. My ID DR seemed confident it was healing and I am on antibiotics for 2 weeks and ointment. This is terrifying. So many people seem to have it. I hope to find friendship and some compssion here. God bless you all.
