Hello all, I have been reading the posts on this board for many weeks. Thanks for keeping it going.
Anyway, I have been sick for about 7 months, I was really too sick to reasearch MRSA as I should have. I really am ignorant about MRSA.I have never heard of it before this.
The facts, I am 53 female fairly good health. On 7/10 my husband took me to the ER. My family thought at the time I was having a stroke I had some body pain but most of all I was delirious, nothing I was saying was making any since. I didn't even want to go to the ER They told me at the hospital that I had MRSA in my bloodstream and I had pneumonia in both my lungs.(no symptoms of pneumonia) from MRSA. And that I would have died by morning if we didn't go to the ER that night. The ID told me I inhaled the MRSA. Was on IV Zyvox for days and the took oral pills once I got home. In December the same thing happened the MRSA came back in my lungs. Same IV drug treatment while I was in the hospital. Since then I have ... read more

A friend had MRSA in Dec - Can I visit?

A friend of mine got MRSA in December. I really want to be around her but every time I am, I freak out that I'm going to get it and wash my hands a ton and am so paranoid. I can't enjoy myself around her. I *cannot* get MRSA as I do not have insurance so I don't know what to do.

She has not shared with me any information about her medical condition - I think she is scared that I won't want to be around her. I assume she is better - she doesn't wear a bandage on her knee anymore and I don't *think* she takes meds anymore.

Is it okay to go over to her house, sit on their couch, touch their faucets, their remote control, hug the family?

What are my chances of getting the bug over there? Is it anymore riskier than being out in public, using public faucets, etc? I just don't know what to do. This is so hard.

MRSA on cheek

My Vet-Tech brother was vacationing in AZ .(we live in CA)and had come down with some swelling in his cheek that he thought originated from cold sore/pimple. He went to the ER they treated him and sent him home to the hotel. 24 hours later the whole side of his face swelled up like the elephant man and was unrecognizable. Back to ER. The put him on an IV drip of some powerful antibiotics and he was there for two more days. The swelling went down some but not much. He flew home(CA) from the hospital on day 4 --AMA. Today is day 6 and the swelling is slowly going down on his face a small change from last night. He is on some powerful oral anti biotic. He is been having trouble sleeping (not sleeping much at all) for fear that he may die in his sleep. This afternoon he has not just left to go back to the hospital to get a CA. doctors second opinion and may be some piece of mind.

How long do you think it may take for him to get better?
For all the swelling to go away?

I have been fighting CA-MRSA for about 4 months now and am so confused. I seen 2 doctors,1 dermatoligist, 1 ID doc.. I have been on Bactrim, Vancocin (oral, heard it dont work), Cleocicin, and now im on Doxycly.. first biopsy came out gram positive no growth, second came out negative. I have no insurance and im broke..

1)My face gets really hot for a long time but I have no fever, is this because of the antibotics? Should I be concerened?

2)How long does it take before I see effects for Doxycyl? Im on day 6 and yet I have no new ones which is good, but two other ones have slight pus..Is this working?

HELP PLEASE! Rifampin for Decolonization???

My 3 yr old has had 3 break out of boils within the past 3 years. He had not had any outbreaks since June 2009. He had his third outbreak Feb 2011 however they cleared up fast with Bactroban and Bactrim.

I suspected he was getting another one, but never really developed into anything might have been a mosquito bite. I took him to an ID specialist for pediatrics and the Dr. immediately decided to treat him with a deconloinzation treatment, even before culture results came back. He wants him to Rifampin for 1 month along with bactroban in the nasal area. I just feel that this treatment is to aggressive considering he has always responded well to bactroban and Bactrim for treatment of an infection.

He also wants my husband to do the same treatment for decolonization without even being cultured............

I can't do the treatment because I am pregnant.

I am just not sure I want to give my child such strong antibiotic without a current infection and just for deco... read more

MRSA in 5 yr. old's throat

My 5 yr. old son was diagnosed w/ a mrsa staph infection in his throat last week. From what I've read on this site, this is something that can keep coming back, which his dr. said nothing about. He said taht as long as he continued to get better, we did not need to follow up about the infection w/ him any longer. Here is a brief description of what went on with my son last week. On the evening of Friday, Aug. 27 my son complained of a headache when I picked him up from daycare after school. By that night he was running a low grade fever & I assumed that he had picked up some kind of virus from school. He ran a low grade fever all weekend and by Monday his fever was getting up to around 102 & he had some white pus on the back of his throat. Was pretty sure that he had gotten strep & took him to the dr. mon. afternoon for a culture. The culture was neg. for strep, but dr. said he would treat him anyway just in case & prescribed omnicef. On wed. took him back to dr. because he was n... read more

First, hello all & thank you for being here and sharing your experiences. Our 15 yr old teenager was just diagnosed w/CA-MRSA after a second recurrence beginning this summer (boils) although we now wonder whether an episode last summer (cellulitis) and an infected lesion after chicken pox (two years ago) are part of the same picture. I (his mom) have just been down the proverbial 'rabbit hole'on the internet for the last two weeks straight weeks reading as much as possible about this pathogen (which still seems very medieval and horrible to me - gahhh! boils!!!)

He is clear at the moment, taking turmeric, garlic, probiotics, washing w/ Hibiclens often, using sanitizer gel, etc. I am keeping linens and clothes separate and washed often, disinfecting the house and environs where possible with a terrific cleaner I found (puregreen24) and using old-fashioned products like iodine to keep all of his many dings and scratches free of germs. I figure that leaving antibiotics for emergenci... read more

I am a 48 yr old woman, who has had her share of being ill. 2 heart
attacks, cancer, spleenectomy, chronic infections. Well i had 2
surgeries on May 31, 2010 one for sinuses and the other for possible
oral cancer re-occuring. Turns out my cancer has returned so went in
for another surgery on the 15th of july, 2010 to remove more tissue
and maybe avoid chemo. Well,,,, while i was in there they cultured me
and put a sign up on my door that said i have mrsa. so now i wait to
hear if there was any more cancer cells in this recent surgery...and i
am really scared of this new mention of mrsa. the doctor's act like it
is no big deal..but with a compromised immune system i reall y think
it is. All they did was give me a piece of paper saying to take care
of cleaning and good luck. One funny thing was when it was time for me
to leave they sent in a different doctor, and i asked him are you
discharging me ? He said and i quote, " if you feel you are well

2. I bought my 3 year old a daily probotic to take, is this something that is safe to give him everyday without harming his immune system?

I could not find any infor about this online so I thought maybe you'll had some info for me. Thanks!!!!!!!!!!

Working in Hospital & Bringing Home MRSA?

My mom works in a hospital, she does housekeeping in a cardiac treatment floor. Is it possibel that the shoes she wears at work can bring any form of MRSA to her house?

The reason I ask is because my child has had 3 staph infections, we don't live with my mom, however he visits often, can it be possible that he got it from my moms house?

I am just paranoid, noone understands my concern about staph infections, they just think I am a germaphobe that wants her kid in a bubble. Makes me cry.

Boils that never drained

Its me again, sorry but you'll seem to know tons about MRSA.

Ok so the last two boils my son got did not drain, I of course noted them right away when they started as tiny looking bites so I immediately started bactroban ointment, took him to the DR and they gave him the sulfa antibiotic.......his boils just vanished after oral antibiotic and the ointment. Is this ok?? I mean they were to small at the time to lance and they did not get big enough to form a head so they vanished after treatment.

Dr's just see this stuff as a regular cold......they see it so often it doesn't phase them anymore. My child tested positive for MRSA in June 2009 but was never tested seems they are just treating boils as if they were MRSA....... Anyways just wanted to know if it was fine they never drained and vanished since they did not get out of control from the very beginning.

Recurrent MRSA skin infections

Hi everyone,

I believe I've been dealing with MRSA infections for at least the past couple years,
but I was only officially diagnosed this past November. I had several surgeries over
the last few years, so I bet I either caught it in the hospital or somewhere else
when my immune system was compromised.

I'm colonized with MRSA, and it's all over my skin. I've had positive cultures in my
groin area as well as in my nose. I'm constantly congested, and when I blow my
nose, it's always green mucus. I also get boils on my arms, legs, and back. The
maximum I have at any one time is probably three, but I think I also have activity
on my scalp.

I went on Bactrim for ten days back in November, and my skin and nasal symptoms
cleared up nicely; however, they all came back within a couple weeks. I saw an
infectious disease doctor yesterday, and he told me to wash my entire body with
Hibiclens once a week and also to put Mupiricin up my nose twice a day for se... read more

Before I knew my wound was MRSA I was
taking a bath while the wound was draining. I
was started on antibiotics the next evening. I
also took a shower after the bath. Am I going
to be covered in boils from head to toe? I feel
as though I'm a dead man. I'm so scared to
stop the antibiotics.
