Throat Culture

My 5yr old has had multiple bouts with ear infections and strep over the last year. Her
adenoids were removed two years ago because of their size. In preparation for a
tonsilectomy later this month her ENT did a throat culture. It came back MRSA. First
question- is this a new infection? She has had cultures done in the past that indicated
strep. Would these cultures not have indicated the MRSA as well if it were present?
Secondly- in that she has no skin lesions, no symptoms and no other signs of
infection what precautions should we be taking? We have two other children that I
want to protect as well as do what is best for her. Is there a possibility that she is just
a carrier and that this was an incidental finding? Finally- The ENT has put her on
Septra but I don't even know if sensitivity testing was done in the lab. Do we wait the
ten days for another culture or do we jump ahead to seek the care of a specialist? I
haven't yet figured out wether or not to l... read more

Howdy Peeps! Just thought I'd drop by to say things still go well for me. It's been 4 years since my initial HA MRSA nightmare. It's hard to believe that you could be so sick for so long and recover. But I did!

This forum was very important to me during those dark and scary hours in the middle of the night when I thought all was lost. So, I try to stop by and offer encouragement to those still in the trenches.

If there is one thing that I can offer more than any other thing is that unless you have a good working relationship with your Infectious Disease Doctor you are in deep trouble. I don't care how amazing your other doctors may be, its the ID that is the one who will assess the damage and prescribe the meds.

And, build up your immune system with the RIGHT foods. Just eating isn't enough. You have to boost your system with dark, leafy greens, high quality protein, less fat and carbohydrates and foods lower in sugar. When on antibiotics, good bacteria dies along with the... read more

Both my mom and step-dad have had boughts with MRSA. Mother had it in her nostril twice and step-dad is just clearing up from his third round. Once on his face, once on belly, once on both inner thighs. I am now very concerned about having my 6 month old son and 4 year old daughter around them and being in their home. My mom keeps saying it's safe now, that my step-dad has cleared up for the third time. I worry though. How long should I wait until it is safe to have them go around their grandparents? Or even be in their home? Doctors keep saying that as long as they are on antibiotics then my children are safe being around them. My step-dad is horrible about not washing his hands. My husband even had a round of MRSA on his arm and we really believe that he picked it up at their house. However he was the first to go through the MRSA, next my Mom, then next my step-father. We had just visited my parents house though when my husband broke out with the infection.

For the last three months I have been told I have MRSA. I had a Gram Stain test ran on a a boil and this came up with rare cocci but no growth. The next month I had yet another Gram Stain ran on a boil but came back negative with no growth. Now this month I had a third boil tested and this came back negative. Amoxicilon, doxyclcyl, bactrim, oral vancocin, and clecocin have had no effects on these boils at all. Any thoughts?

I want to share my experience with mrsa. I was admitted to the hospital about 5 weeks ago with a very serious mrsa ear infection. I was first treated at an urgent care for swimmers ear and the infection progressed very rapidly. My ear swelled completely shut and I had lots of blood and pus draining from my ear. I'd never had an ear infection before. By the time I was able to get in to see an ENT dr. I was very sick. He took one look and scheduled me for surgery. The culture came back positive for mrsa. I was shocked because it happened so quickly and I'm a very healthy person. I was given clindamyicin and a sulfa ear drop. I took the antibiotics as prescribed and also supplemented them with a garlic water solution. I irrigated my sinuses and used the water as an ear drop. I did this twice a day for 2 weeks. I am happy to say that my last swabs have all came back negative for mrsa. I have decided that if I feel even a twinge in my ear, I will use the garlic again. My hope is... read more

Hello all, I have been reading the posts on this board for many weeks. Thanks for keeping it going.
Anyway, I have been sick for about 7 months, I was really too sick to reasearch MRSA as I should have. I really am ignorant about MRSA.I have never heard of it before this.
The facts, I am 53 female fairly good health. On 7/10 my husband took me to the ER. My family thought at the time I was having a stroke I had some body pain but most of all I was delirious, nothing I was saying was making any since. I didn't even want to go to the ER They told me at the hospital that I had MRSA in my bloodstream and I had pneumonia in both my lungs.(no symptoms of pneumonia) from MRSA. And that I would have died by morning if we didn't go to the ER that night. The ID told me I inhaled the MRSA. Was on IV Zyvox for days and the took oral pills once I got home. In December the same thing happened the MRSA came back in my lungs. Same IV drug treatment while I was in the hospital. Since then I have ... read more

A friend had MRSA in Dec - Can I visit?

A friend of mine got MRSA in December. I really want to be around her but every time I am, I freak out that I'm going to get it and wash my hands a ton and am so paranoid. I can't enjoy myself around her. I *cannot* get MRSA as I do not have insurance so I don't know what to do.

She has not shared with me any information about her medical condition - I think she is scared that I won't want to be around her. I assume she is better - she doesn't wear a bandage on her knee anymore and I don't *think* she takes meds anymore.

Is it okay to go over to her house, sit on their couch, touch their faucets, their remote control, hug the family?

What are my chances of getting the bug over there? Is it anymore riskier than being out in public, using public faucets, etc? I just don't know what to do. This is so hard.

MRSA on cheek

My Vet-Tech brother was vacationing in AZ .(we live in CA)and had come down with some swelling in his cheek that he thought originated from cold sore/pimple. He went to the ER they treated him and sent him home to the hotel. 24 hours later the whole side of his face swelled up like the elephant man and was unrecognizable. Back to ER. The put him on an IV drip of some powerful antibiotics and he was there for two more days. The swelling went down some but not much. He flew home(CA) from the hospital on day 4 --AMA. Today is day 6 and the swelling is slowly going down on his face a small change from last night. He is on some powerful oral anti biotic. He is been having trouble sleeping (not sleeping much at all) for fear that he may die in his sleep. This afternoon he has not just left to go back to the hospital to get a CA. doctors second opinion and may be some piece of mind.

How long do you think it may take for him to get better?
For all the swelling to go away?

I have been fighting CA-MRSA for about 4 months now and am so confused. I seen 2 doctors,1 dermatoligist, 1 ID doc.. I have been on Bactrim, Vancocin (oral, heard it dont work), Cleocicin, and now im on Doxycly.. first biopsy came out gram positive no growth, second came out negative. I have no insurance and im broke..

1)My face gets really hot for a long time but I have no fever, is this because of the antibotics? Should I be concerened?

2)How long does it take before I see effects for Doxycyl? Im on day 6 and yet I have no new ones which is good, but two other ones have slight pus..Is this working?

HELP PLEASE! Rifampin for Decolonization???

My 3 yr old has had 3 break out of boils within the past 3 years. He had not had any outbreaks since June 2009. He had his third outbreak Feb 2011 however they cleared up fast with Bactroban and Bactrim.

I suspected he was getting another one, but never really developed into anything might have been a mosquito bite. I took him to an ID specialist for pediatrics and the Dr. immediately decided to treat him with a deconloinzation treatment, even before culture results came back. He wants him to Rifampin for 1 month along with bactroban in the nasal area. I just feel that this treatment is to aggressive considering he has always responded well to bactroban and Bactrim for treatment of an infection.

He also wants my husband to do the same treatment for decolonization without even being cultured............

I can't do the treatment because I am pregnant.

I am just not sure I want to give my child such strong antibiotic without a current infection and just for deco... read more

MRSA in 5 yr. old's throat

My 5 yr. old son was diagnosed w/ a mrsa staph infection in his throat last week. From what I've read on this site, this is something that can keep coming back, which his dr. said nothing about. He said taht as long as he continued to get better, we did not need to follow up about the infection w/ him any longer. Here is a brief description of what went on with my son last week. On the evening of Friday, Aug. 27 my son complained of a headache when I picked him up from daycare after school. By that night he was running a low grade fever & I assumed that he had picked up some kind of virus from school. He ran a low grade fever all weekend and by Monday his fever was getting up to around 102 & he had some white pus on the back of his throat. Was pretty sure that he had gotten strep & took him to the dr. mon. afternoon for a culture. The culture was neg. for strep, but dr. said he would treat him anyway just in case & prescribed omnicef. On wed. took him back to dr. because he was n... read more

First, hello all & thank you for being here and sharing your experiences. Our 15 yr old teenager was just diagnosed w/CA-MRSA after a second recurrence beginning this summer (boils) although we now wonder whether an episode last summer (cellulitis) and an infected lesion after chicken pox (two years ago) are part of the same picture. I (his mom) have just been down the proverbial 'rabbit hole'on the internet for the last two weeks straight weeks reading as much as possible about this pathogen (which still seems very medieval and horrible to me - gahhh! boils!!!)

He is clear at the moment, taking turmeric, garlic, probiotics, washing w/ Hibiclens often, using sanitizer gel, etc. I am keeping linens and clothes separate and washed often, disinfecting the house and environs where possible with a terrific cleaner I found (puregreen24) and using old-fashioned products like iodine to keep all of his many dings and scratches free of germs. I figure that leaving antibiotics for emergenci... read more
