Boil 5 days after decol/Zyvox

I was recently diagnosed with MRSA. I am a Radiation Therapist and deal with
cancer patients daily so my ID doc decided to attempt decolonization for me and
my family. I was given a nasal swab to start and received the news the next day
from my hemotogist/oncologist and was in to see the ID doc in 2 days. I was
referred for possible hidradenitis suppurativa but that was secondary to my
MRSA infection. We were on the protocol for 10 days with Zyvox( after failure on
Keflex and Augmentun) for myself for 10 days to coincided with it. I had 7 boils
under my left armpit and 2 on my right. 5 days after stopping the meds and nasal
ointment, I have a new boil emerging under my left armpit. We are still doing the
hibiclens showers. I have leukocytosis and thrombocytosis of unknown origin for
about 7 years and low immunoglobulin G so I am considered
immunocompromised. I am going back to the ID doctor in 3 days so we will see
what happens next. He told me that the hope ... read more

Does mourning reduce immune?

Been clear of mrsa for few months now, basically i went on a ritual of - tumeric powder pills (2 x day)
- a very good quality whole food vitamin per day
- cut out sugar big time, basically sugar free as much as possible
- sanitizer gel use a lot
- cleanliness, daily showers
- organic coconut oil for moisturizer
.... and it's been successful for a few months no problems, was very happy, it was easy to manage once i got into the ritual etc.

Then my pet passed away after 17 years (pet passing had nothing related to mrsa, she had lymphoma and was very old). Anyways after dealing with a difficult week of mourning .... bam, the mrsa can back in groin, 3 pea size ones.

So I did everything right, but was sad/down...is this why it came back? does sadness/mourning lower immune?

sigh.

I was diagnosed with MRSA in September 2006. I believe it was at my place of employment which was a public transit system as a mechanic.3 of us were diagnosed within a 2 week period. Company could have cared less but that's another story. Since then I have been to 3 different doctors, my regular doc, a dermatologist, and an ID doctor. The first 2 did cultures and thru antibiotics at it. The ID doc just went on my word and put me on a pic line with clydimycin for a week. Well I beleive all the antibiotics made it worse. I used to get one every couple months. Since February of this year(08), I have gotten multiple boils at the same time CONSTANTLY. Almost unbearable at this point. I told my regular doc to give me some pain med to make it thru the worst ones. I am now totally done with western medicine except for a trauma situation. Seems they just don't know or don't get it. I've been doing research and am taking probiotics, allicin(garlic) and using tea tree oil on my boils. Hopeful... read more

TWO STUDENTS W/MRSA

I just received a phone call that a second student in my Pre-K class has a positive MRSA culture. All my students have Autism and we are VERY hands on. I have a couple questions...How can I find out if I am infected? My primary care doctor said she could only test for it if I have something on the skin. How do I know if either of these students come out of remission and are highly contagious? I have a knee replacement, is that at risk? Thanks for your help.

My 5 year old son and myself have been dealing with MRSA for about 6
months now. We are both on our 3rd round of antibiotics and I'm scared
to death of this! I'm so depressed. I feel so alone. I can barely get
out of bed in the morning because I'm so sad and rundown. My son
doesn't really understand why I am crying all the time. He is always
commented about when the MRSA goes away..blah blah...and that makes me
even more sad because it's not going to ever completely go away.

How do other parents get through this on a day to day basis?? I just
can't imagine dealing with these boils for the rest of our lives and
then what if we become antibiotic resistance??? And all the extra
cleaning and laundry is exhausting being a single mom!! If it was just
me that had MRSA I think I could deal with it but it kills me that my
5 year old little boy has it too :-( What kind of life will he have
now?

Plus now I will never be able to get married bc who would want to d... read more

Cellulitis/MRSA

Was recently dignosed with cellulitis. Diagnosed in emergency room, where I alerted any/all that I had been treated 5 months before for MRSA. Was given intravenous vancomycin, given high salt IV, and bactroban. Sequestered myself after MD said I was contagious, and missed 5 days of work. Leg from ankle to groin became bright cherry red, swollen, with hard, itchy and painful areas under skin. ER MD said he wanted a CAT scan, which I refused. My GP following day suggested an ultrasound, which I immediately had. Showed the lumps to be swollen lymph nodes. Given prescription of SMZ/TMP DS 800-160 got another 10 days. Lymph nodes no longer swollen, redness gone, still feel weak but getting more normal.

I checked my American Medical Association Family Medical Guide under cellulitis, and found it is typically caused by one of 2 different infections: either Staphyllococcus or Streptococcus. Blood test was done by hospital, but results not made available to me. Feel I'm being kept in the ... read more

Need Quick Advice About Neck Pain/Swelling

Someday, I shall post my sob tale, but suffice to say, I've followed your board for 2 weeks since we've become members of this fine little club you have going on here. =)

Now I need some potentially urgent advice.

Tiny bit of background:

2 weeks ago, 10yo son had a "spider bite" on his arm, which of course, was not a spider bite...was a MRSA boil.

Boil drained and and is mostly "healed", he has been on Septra for 2 weeks, he's almost done with it. A few other "suspicious" areas seemed to maybe START to develop since the boil, but never amounted to anything so far.

After learniing more about this wonderful germ than any doctor cares to mention, it might be "of note" that my son had a sudden stand-alone (no upper respiratory illness with it) ear infection about 7 days before developing the boil. He hadn't had one since he was about 5yo. Of further interest may be that "blisters" were noted in his middle ear by the doc. In other words, one could argue that MIGHT have be... read more

I went to the heart hospital and had five bypasses at the same time in the coronary arteries of my heart. They let me go home in five days. I began throwing up this black bile, and was sent back to the same hospital. The doctor said the black bnile was old blood, so they had to take my sternum out because the doctor said the infection had
eaten up and rotted the sternum. Then they told me I had mrsa. I was in the hospital for a month, and then on IV's for the last three weeks. The blood tests have been negative for mrsa. Can I sue for all I went through.

Sister Has MRSA

My 57-year old sister was admitted to the hospital several days ago with pneumonia, blood in her urine and pain in her hip and abdomen where the gall bladder lies. They said she had a gallstone. A blood culture showed MERSA. She works as the Personnel Director in a small hospital, having worked in that capacity in bigger hospitals in the past. Her husband is the Business Office Manager at the hospital where she's a patient. Could she have contracted this bug at work? At the hospital where she's a patient? If it came from the hospital where she's hospitalized, it would have been a VERY quickly acquired infection, since her husband told me she had Staph in her blood the next day? I think it was after admission.
She's going for a MRI this morning, and she's supposed to call me this evening - if she forgets, I'll call her. She lives about 500 miles from here, so I'll be calling her frequently.
What I've read on the internet about this infection is horrible!
Any info would be... read more

Can MRSA cause hypertension & CHF

Hi Lady K. I hope this finds you well. It has been 3 years since I was released from the hospital with MRSA on the way to being "cured" by April 5, 2009. Early on during my 3 month hospitalization I was told I had CHF. I had been seeing my cardiologist on a regular basis and she never said anything about having CHF. In the last 2 weeks of my hospitalization my BP skyrocketed to 200 systolic. I was given Lisinapril to bring it down. It did a little. Of course my question is can the MRSA have caused the CHF? And could it have caused my BP increase. I have been having bouts of CHF almost every six months since I was released from the hospital 4/5/2009. Never had any signs prior to MRSA. My BP has never been the same either. I do have bad genes for cardiac problems. Just wonderingP435L

How likely is it to pass MRSA?

I have a 19 month old daughter, who has had 5 outbreaks that have had to be lanced since she was 6 months old. She had her 1st outbreak at 6 months. The dr. lanced it and gave topical antibiotics, then when she had another outbreak a week later, they put her on sulfa drugs. She didn't have another outbreak until after her 1st birthday. That one was also treated with sulfa. Then since Christmas, she has had several more outbreaks. In January, we tried sulfa again, but the spot continued to get worse, so the dr. changed it to clindamycin. While it cleared up, 2 weeks later, she had another outbreak.
We have several playgroup moms who are concerned about us passing it on to their kids. We always wait 2 weeks after an outbreak before going around other kids. So, how likely is it to pass MRSA on?

My biggest fear out of this whole thing is passing this thing on to
others. How easy is this to pass to someone else. When I have an out
break should I have my husband and I sleep separately or is it okay if
it is covered? Some one told me as long as I was not oozing something it
was ok and could be passed to someone, is this true?

My name is Wayne and I was cursed with a full blown MRSA into Cellulitis blow
out that started in September and has continued in various stages since. This
struck my right leg from the knee down and has crippled me and my life since. I
was changing dressings after cleaning and debriding every day and I was healing
up really well and then, for reasons unknown, I staretd to get an infection which
seemed like staph. you could see a line about halfway up my right leg, above it was
healed and below it was a nasty mess, the same line just above my ankle, below
healed, above joining the nasty mess. I could literally see it advancing daily, just
consuming my leg. There was lots of leakage and raw skin. Then, while still
advancing, this "nasty mess" seemed to turn into a really tuff, leathery, crusty
coating. I tried washing it off but it is really stubborn. I used Hibicleanse and
scrubbed and I suceeded in just turning any exposed skin raw and painful. It also
